HA1 Task 1 – The Value Chain

Developers: A Game Developer is a software developer that creates video games. A developer may specialize in a certain video game console, such as Nintendo's Wii, Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3, or may develop for a variety of systems, including personal computers.
Developers such as Bio-ware and Gearbox develop games such as Mass Effect and Borderlands art; they usually rely on publishers such as: Activision and THQ for money and media coverage this would help them develop the game a lot faster may sometimes outsource work to other companies.

Console Manufacturers/First Party Publishers: Console Manufacturers/First Party Publishers or CM/FPP are companies that make the hardware, such as games consoles, that games are played on –specifically Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo are the top three CM/FPP but now that mobile phone based platform are becoming more popular companies such as apple, Android Market and Windows Phones. Two examples of this are naughty dog who were bought by Sony to make games exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and Rare who were bought by Microsoft to make games exclusively for the Xbox.

Publishers: Publishers are the people who support developers in making a game such as financial support and media coverage in return for a cut of the profit. Publishers have a key influence on what games get made. They are mostly international companies with a UK base, with some notable home–grown exceptions.

Press and Media: This is a large sector, providing journalistic output, reviews and analysis for both trade and consumer. It includes magazines, websites, and television, they also help determine the success of the game when it is first showed, the press and media can be paid to advertise more by publishers, have interviews with devs, get early footage of a game or use a number of other methods to affect a game viewing

Distribution and Retail: Retail and Distribution are the companies that order the games then sell them to us, as the customers. You can purchase a product from a retailer at a store, such as "Blockbuster" or even online, with a company such as "Amazon". When ordering a game online say from “Amazon” the products will then be distributed to the customer. The disadvantages to order products online from amazon is that they can be delayed also the product can be sent through the post but as ordering online this can also be delayed.

Outsourcing Companies: They may specialise in a specific field, in which a larger company could hire them to do. This allows the larger companies to maintain the strength of their main work force that may or may not specialise in the task at hand, while avoiding the extra cost of brand new employees
