HA1 Task 4 – Business Models

Business Models
Arcade: During the 70's and 80's business was booming for Arcade, these machines were mad by big companies such as Sega, Namco and Bandi. The games for these massive, impressive machines was developed by games developers, one of the most popular games was "space invaders" this Arcade game was mostly popular than any other game in Japan because when "Space Invaders" was introduced in 1978 there was a massive coin shortage throughout the company. The downfall of the Arcade Machines was that they were public, so everyone can see what you are doing on the machine and the way the Arcade Machine was so big it was too heavy to carry round with you.

Box Ship, Done: In the 80's, 90's and 00's a business model called Box Ship, Done these models started to replace the Arcade Machines but we still see Arcade Machines in amusement parks and other places. From the Arcade Machines came the Consoles, these machines are closed communities because they were made for home use and they weren't networked and was very profitable; if you don't have a console, you can't play the most popular games. The result was that developers don't create games that can't be played on one of Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo's devices. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo became dominant after Sega pulled out of hardware manufacture in 2001.

Observe, Measure and Modify: In the modern day there is less physical good being distributed around the globe because the amount of content distributed digitally is increasing. There is no need to manufacture game content on disk because you can just download the content via the internet on your Console or PC. This is very cost efficient for the publishers, because gamers are connecting online, the developers can monitor what they are doing also they can respond to the gamers so basically the gamer is becoming part of the development team. Digital distribution becomes normal for people to go to websites such as onlive.co.uk who start to offer cloud gaming without a consol. Personally i think it is to with the huge up rise in Smartphones, Tablets and on-demand TV services. will the console become extinct? or will they evolve into specialist controls expanding the use of gesture control, 3D and virtual reality?
